
Communion - The Great Thanksgiving
Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month. The Lord's Supper reminds us that Jesus Christ is the host and that we participate at Christ's invitation. This sacrament is representative of that special meal that Christ ate with his disciples on the night before his crucifixion.
Communion Methodist believe in an "open communion" which means that all are welcome to receive the elements. This is different than some other denominations that require membership in order to participate. Recently the Beverly UMC held a children's communion class to help the young understand why do we do what we do. The handout is below. When connected to traditions in our homes, such as Thanksgiving and birthday to remember, using turkey or cake, the children we able to connect Jesus using bread and juice as tangible item for the family to gather around the table to be in fellowship and communion with him. Communion is really the compound words of "com" meaning with and union together. With union with God!
Our communion liturgy begins with words spoken on Jesus’ behalf inviting “all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin, and seek to live in peace with one another.”
For communion you are invited to come to the front of the church and receive the elements. Follow the lead of the ushers. No where does the bible say, how to have communion, how often, what kind of bread or juice/wine, just what attitude: a repentant heart in remembrance of Jesus mighty acts.
